Harvest is full steam ahead for most of the country. As of October 11, 41 percent of corn and 61 percent of soybeans are out, according to the latest USDA National Statistics Survey crop progress report. This also means that harvest is picking up for Stine growers throughout the territories we serve. From the East Coast to the upper Midwest, here’s what our regional sales agronomists are reporting.
Dustin Ellis, Region 4, Central and Southcentral Iowa
In Region 4, we are about done with soybeans and should wrap them up by the end of the week. We are very pleased with our Enlist E3® soybeans this year, and especially happy about how well they handled stress. Our top-yielding Enlist E3 soybeans last year and again this year are Stine 19EA33, 21EA32, 24EA12 and 27EA23. Stine 19EC32 and 19EC33 are looking outstanding and are some of our new C-series soybeans that need to be considered for 2021.
In our area, growers just started harvesting corn a few days ago, and we’re probably 30–40 percent done. We should see a lot of people wrapping up in two weeks. We’re seeing great performance again from Stine 9714-G, 9709-G and 9808E-G, which continue to be some of the top-yielding products in our territory. And, of course, we cannot forget 9434-11 and 9436-11 for growers who need earlier maturity hybrids. Two new products planted this year and that we are excited about for 2021 are Stine 9543-G and 9547-G.
It has been a great fall, and we are very blessed to have decent weather and great yields. We look forward to 2021.
Chad Kuehl, Region 5 RSA, South Central Nebraska, Southwestern Iowa
In Region 5, most people are finishing with soybeans and moving on to corn. A good portion of the region was affected by the drought, but we’re still seeing some good yields on dryland acres. When it comes to the irrigated fields, we’re seeing some exceptional yields from the Stine Enlist E3s. We saw multiple plots with the average above 90 bushels/acre. When it comes to corn, so far Stine 9709, 9734 and 9808E are all performing very well. We saw more conventional acres go out this past year than ever, and growers are really happy with what they’re seeing on yield from these hybrids.
Tony Pleggenkuhle, Region 10, Northeast Iowa and Southeast Minnesota
Yields in corn and soybeans have both been very erratic, with highs in the 70s and lows in the teens within the same field for soybeans and highs in the 270s and lows in the 110s for corn. The heavier low ground in the field is yielding well while the lighter hilltops dried up too early and are much less productive. Approximately 80 percent of the soybean acres have been harvested and roughly 50 percent of the corn acres.
Kevin Krabel, Region 13, Central Illinois
Harvest has been in full swing in Region 13 for the past few weeks. Favorable weather has allowed a majority of the soybeans in the region to get cut, and a decent percentage of corn has been shelled as well. Stine Enlist E3 soybeans are performing extremely well throughout the region. Stine 27EA23, 34EA12, 36EA02 and 39EA02 are standing out as top performers. One grower in Region 13 told me his Stine Enlist E3 soybeans are “as good or better across the board” than any of the Asgrow® Xtend® soybeans he planted this year.
With many growers just now wrapping up soybean harvest and switching to corn, we haven’t heard a lot of corn numbers yet. But, from what has been harvested, Stine 9808E-20 is showing why it’s still a top-selling hybrid in the region. We also took out the plot in ISR Cliff Schuette’s district, and Stine 9734-0 won the plot with 223.7 bushels/acre, with 9746-20 and 9744-20 coming in right behind with 223.1 and 222.6 bushels/acre, respectively.
Katie Lorenz, Region 21, Northeastern North Dakota
Corn harvest is just getting underway in North Dakota. Our wet spring weather made it hard to get acres in, but this fall is proving to be the opposite and allowing growers to get in and out of the dry fields in record harvest time. Even with an early September frost, we have been turning in record yields for Stine Enlist E3 soybeans. Stine 01EA63 and 03EB02 have been knocking it out of the park with yields in the 60s. North Dakota is about 25 percent into corn harvest, and we are excited to continue to see those yield results on top.
Grant Collier, Region 25 RSA, Ohio, Pennsylvania, East Coast
In Ohio and Pennsylvania, most growers are beginning to wrap up soybean harvest and are starting corn. The soybean yield reports are highly variable. The field averages range from 30–75 bushels/acre, depending on soil types. The light ground was hit hard with the drought, and that is where we’re seeing the lowest yields. Stine Enlist E3 soybeans are crushing the competition! Corn yields are just starting to come in, so stay tuned.
