For more than 40 years, Stine® Seed Company has partnered with Osage, Iowa-based Patterson Seed for its seed conditioning services. A third-generation company that started in 1976 as a part-time public variety soybean and oat conditioning facility, Patterson Seed has grown into a full-time operation, now working with private seed companies like Stine.
“We have conditioned for various companies through the years, but hands down, Stine has been the company for us for over 40 years,” says Mike Patterson, second-generation owner/operator of Patterson Seed.
Patterson says they prioritize three things to ensure the success of their business: excellent genetics, dedicated growers and quality seed. Patterson notes they also work with many generational farmers, which contributes to the trust clients place in their operations.
Recently, Patterson offered a tour of the company’s farm and seed conditioning facilities to Stine President Myron Stine and National Marketing and Sales Director David Thompson. Throughout the tour, Patterson shared the history of Patterson Seed, including how its relationship with Stine came about.
After the tour, Patterson sat down with Thompson to share his tips for running a successful seed conditioning business and why he appreciates working with Stine.
“It’s really a breath of fresh air to work with the Stine company versus a corporate company that you have to follow a chain of command,” says Patterson. “You don’t know if you’re ever talking to the right person. Here [at Stine], if you have a question, you can call somebody up and get them on the phone. You can call Harry if you need to talk to Harry, and he’ll talk to you.”
We thank Mike Patterson and Patterson Seed for the work they do to produce high-quality seed for our grower customers and their longstanding commitment to Stine.
“To have a relationship that spans decades is remarkable,” says Stine. “I’m grateful for the time Mike spent with us sharing his story and for all the hard work he and his team do to condition Stine seed.”
